Root Canal: What Is It?

A root canal is a dental procedure designed to save a badly decayed or damaged tooth. Without this treatment, the tooth can become severely infected and lead to the formation of an abscess.

Why Would You Need a Root Canal?

If this infection reaches the soft pulp inside the tooth, which houses the roots, it can cause significant discomfort and may lead to an abscess. Abscesses are often painful and can cause swelling and tenderness around the affected tooth.

When Do You Need a Root Canal?

How Does a Root Canal Procedure Work?

At Weideman Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, root canal therapy involves carefully removing the decayed portion of the tooth and accessing the pulp chamber.

Using thin, precise metal files, your doctor will remove the infected pulp and nerves within the tooth, thoroughly cleaning the canals inside.

Once the infected pulp is cleared, the canals are sterilized and filled with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material that melts at a low temperature. This allows us to completely seal the sterilized canals, reducing the risk of future infection.

To ensure your comfort, you’ll receive a local anesthetic before the procedure to eliminate any pain or discomfort. Root canals are a safe and effective way to save a tooth that’s been compromised by infection.

Caring for Your Teeth After a Root Canal

After a root canal, we often recommend placing a dental crown on the treated tooth. By the time a root canal is necessary, the damage is typically too extensive for a filling alone.

A crown helps protect the tooth, which becomes more vulnerable to fractures once the infected tissue is removed.

Most patients experience immediate relief from the pain of an abscess following a root canal. Some tenderness around the treated tooth is normal for a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief, like ibuprofen.
