Root Canal Therapy FAQs
How Does a Root Canal Procedure Work?
At Weideman Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, root canal therapy involves carefully removing the decayed portion of the tooth and accessing the pulp chamber.
Using thin, precise metal files, your child’s doctor will remove the infected pulp and nerves within the tooth, thoroughly cleaning the canals inside.
Once the infected pulp is cleared, the canals are sterilized and filled with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material that melts at a low temperature. This allows us to completely seal the sterilized canals, reducing the risk of future infection.
We’ll give your child a safe and effective local anesthetic before the procedure to eliminate any pain or discomfort. Root canals are a time-tested and ideal way to save a tooth that’s been compromised by infection.
Caring for Your Child’s Teeth After a Root Canal
After a root canal, we often recommend placing a dental crown on the treated tooth. By the time a root canal is necessary, the damage is typically too extensive for a filling alone.
A crown helps protect the tooth, which becomes more vulnerable to fractures once the infected tissue is removed. Most patients experience immediate relief from the pain of an abscess following a root canal. Some tenderness around the treated tooth is normal for a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief, like ibuprofen.
If your child experiences severe pain or swelling after the procedure, contact our Citrus Heights office right away for a follow-up appointment.
